We introduced an application control system architecture based on dynamically loadable task capsules to allow flexible adaptation to specific requirements of a distributed environment. This approach does not only allow the reuse of any kind of applications, but through the use of object orientation it is also possible to provide different policy objects. These encapsulate the knowledge of how to manipulate tasks or what to do with data that the tasks produce. Concerning task control we can distinguish between two architectures: the centralised manager one and the distributed one. The problem of task control can thus be compared with the problem of distributed coordination[CDK94, pp. 300] as applied to process synchronisation, clock synchronisation or transaction management. For the prototype we provided policy objects that implement a decentralised, distributed approach.
